Pensions Bill progress…

Just a quick note to update you on the progress of the Pensions Bill. As per my post https://www.jelfgroup.com/blog/2011/01/pensions-bill-off-and-running/ this is currently working it’s way through the House of Lords.

To check on progress of the bill please use this link: http://services.parliament.uk/bills/2010-11/pensionshl.html

I have kindly been provided with a link to the Lords debate by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). I felt that in the interests of keeping the blog followers informed I should attempt to both read and summarise the debate to date here.

To this end I started enthusiastically reading the debate line by line, then skim reading, and eventually skipping entire pages, and to be frank I was no nearer a true understanding of what was going on, other than most principle areas of the legislation seem to remain unscathed at this point. I have therefore resolved to only update you on the debates if something significant occurs, or at pivotal moments in the progress of this bill (and even then only if they are important to this audience).

In my defence, reading a Parlimentary debate in this sort of detail only serves to highlight that the language and customs used in the UK Parliament do need a radical overhaul to remain relevant to the modern world. I lost count of the number of formal pleasantries (‘I thank the Noble Baroness for that explanation’ etc) which made reading the document feel more like a lesson in history than a current debate. This in turn makes it hard to concentrate on the core arguments, many of them well founded, which seems a strange approach given the importance of this legislation.

Anyway, will keep you posted as things progress.

Best regards

Steve
