Australian public health experts warn that locals are at risk because of the lack of a central coordination body to control infectious disease outbreaks, according to the Public Health Association of Australia.
Pressure between the states and the commonwealth might pose a serious risk to the country in times of disease outbreaks, said Michael Moore, chief executive of the Association. He added that it is unknown when the next epidemic will emerge and therefore it is critical for the country to have a disease control centre to prepare for such cases. A coordination centre should be empowered to control state responses to threats, with appropriate checks and balances, Moore said.
