Pineapple – a humble fruit; or a significant cyber threat?

We all know that fruit is healthy for us, but when it comes to business, a pineapple, (or as they are known in the hacking world, a WIFI Pineapple) has a more sinister role.

Cyber-crime is on the increase, and is now one of the most popular ways to commit fraud/theft of data and money, as it can be done remotely, using devices such as the Pineapple.

Could a pineapple be a cyber threat to your business?

The Pineapple mimics trusted networks so that your smartphone, iPad etc. will connect to it, therefore leaving any data contained within your device vulnerable. If you happen to connect to your work e-mail and enter your user name and password whilst connected, this information is stored by the Pineapple and voila, easy access. You, on the other hand, will be none the wiser.

We recently addressed this issue during a Jelf webinar, where cyber security expert Jason Hart spoke about the risks and exposures of cyber space and even conducted a ‘live’ hack using the Pineapple device, demonstrating how a business could open itself to risk. Click here to view a recording.

Entitled “Is your business at risk of cyber-attack” the webinar also addressed some of the ‘myths’ surrounding cyber threats including:

  • Only large businesses are targeted
  • Identifying that you’ve had a breach is easy (66% of breaches in Verizon’s 2013 data breach investigations report took months or even years to discover)*

As well as providing tips on protecting your business with 3 other topical speakers.

Unfortunately, the future of hacking is already here, but you can minimise your exposure by putting the right protection in place.
