Our last London event of the year…

We are fast approaching the end of 2013, yet we can still find time to squeeze in another of our fun and informative Jelf Employment Seminars. Once again we have sought the right chemical mix of speakers to provide delegates with another great event.

Tim Randles (Employment Law) and Steve Herbert (Employee Benefits) will both provide their usual (or perhaps unusual?) topical updates. We are also fortunate to welcome John Gillman and Dr Phil Friend OBE to give a pragmatic insight into the increasingly important topic of disability in the workplace. Order will be maintained by our ever popular seminar chairman, Peter Matthews.

We have, once again, sought a venue which will be of interest to our delegates. The Science Museum is the most visited science and technology museum in Europe, and hosts a vast range of objects and interactive displays for our delegates to enjoy. Amongst the varied items on display are several full sized aeroplanes (including both a Spitfire and Hurricane fighter), Stephenson’s steam engine “Rocket”, the Apollo 10 Command Module, and Babbage’s “Difference engine”. Delegates will have the chance to view this superb venue after the seminar concludes, and we are also providing delegates with an optional free ride on the Red Arrows 3D simulator! The Science Museum is, of course, easily accessible via all forms of public transport.

Full agenda

Disability in the Workplace: “Assets not problems”

It’s estimated that 1 in 6 of the working population of the UK has a disability, and with the Default Retirement Age now consigned to the legislative dustbin, its increasingly likely that organisations of all sizes will find themselves employing disabled workers either now, or in the near future. This interactive session will seek to dispel some myths around employment of disabled workers, and will include the cost of adjustments, managing performance rather than the disability and, crucially, how to equip the disabled employee to become their own advocate. John and Phil are experts in this vital employment area and take a pragmatic stance on the issues involved. This session is sure to both informative and fun.

Speakers: Dr Phil Friend OBE, Chair, Disability Rights UK & John Gillman, Adviser to the Board of Trustees, Disability Rights UK

Employment Law: “It may be new, but is it science?’’

As Tim is wont to say, it’s amazing how many statutes it takes to complete a Red Tape Challenge. With many of the Government employment reforms finally coming in to force, Tim will consider progress to date, take a tour through the new Tribunal rules, ACAS Guidance etc. and consider the changes still to come. As ever he will also review recent cases which have caught his eye and share his know-how. Can a single employee be an ‘organised grouping’ whose ‘principal purpose’ is the activity to transfer under a TUPE service provision changeover? Tim will let you know.

Speaker: Tim Randles, Associate Director, Penningtons Solicitors LLP

Employee Benefits: “Eureka!”

“Eureka” meaning “I have found it” is famously attributed to the Greek scholar Archimedes after a significant scientific discovery. Steve will seek to provide delegates with details of their potential Eureka moments in 2014 by looking at the potential hot topics ahead. Subjects covered will include the recent OFT report on pensions (and what this means for employers), the latest changes to Pensions Auto-Enrolment legislation and requirements, and the most recent updates (and responses to consultations) regarding the 2014 introduction of The Independent Assessment Service, Tax incentive for medical interventions and Childcare Vouchers. Topical updates on other areas will be included as appropriate.

Speaker: Steve Herbert, Head of Benefits Strategy, Jelf Employee Benefits
