Meeting with the Pensions Minister

As many of our followers will know, Jelf Employee Benefits (JEB) recently hosted an ‘invite only’ round table event on the subject of pensions, with the Minister for Pensions, Steve Webb MP.

The event, which was held last month at Thornbury Castle, was unusual in that the employers represented were deliberately and carefully chosen to represent a community who are often unheard in the area of pension legislation. It has long been my view that much, if not most, pension legislation has a disproportionate impact on smaller employers (say those with between 50 and 1000 staff), but that this same grouping has less of a voice with industry bodies and the Government (in effect, a double whammy of impact and disenfranchisement). This event sought to overturn this by letting a small grouping have their say and hear direct from the Minister on various pension issues.

It’s worth flagging up here and now that I was more than a little surprised that the general feeling from the day was that employers were generally supportive of auto-enrolment, and there was even a sub-text of ‘make it compulsory’ from some. Hopefully as this blog starts to get established, we will get more of an insight into what you, the employer, wants and that will assist us greatly as we fight your corner on future legislation changes in all aspects of employee benefits.

My thanks to the employers who were represented on the day. For info, here are some links to articles which picked up on our post event press release:
