About us

Founded in 1936, John Lampier & Son Ltd began life in a coffee shop on Baldwin Street. Two local insurance inspectors, Ronald Chaffe and Howard Carter decided to begin their own insurance company servicing the needs of local businesses. Naming the firm after the Christian name of one of their clients, they were based in offices around central Bristol before moving into the first floor of Edgecumbe Hall in Clifton, our current home, in 1982.

The Jelf Group was founded in 1989 by Christopher Jelf and had offices in Soundwell and Speedwell before moving to the Group's current Head Office in Yate in 1998. After 15 years of expansion, Jelf floated on the stock market in 2004. Jelf acquired John Lampier & Co in 2007 to create the largest Bristol-based insurance broker.

In 2010, we merged the teams from Lampier with Jelf's existing broker business in Bristol to create a new local force in commercial insurance. Our name changed to Jelf Lampier and we took over the whole building at Edgecumbe Hall. Today, we boast a permanent team of over 100 people including a dedicated team of 30 sales executives and importantly a dedicated local claims team able to respond quickly and efficiently to the needs of Bristol businesses.

As part of Jelf, a leading independent business consultancy, we have the advantage of enhanced buying and negotiation power with the lead insurers. It also enables us to deliver a more holistic range of services to our clients including healthcare, employee benefits and financial advice.

As we've grown we've continued to pride ourselves on the quality of the personal service we provide to our clients. Indeed, in the recent Investors in Customers (IIC) Awards we received the prestigious grading of ‘Exceptional' – a standard we're committed to maintaining.
