About us
Jelf's history in Reading can be traced back to 1921 when two prominent members of the Reading community formed Goss & Co. Captain Ernest E Goss was a master mariner and one of the last men to have sailed around Cape Horn on a commercial clipper. His brother William Goss would go on to become Mayor of Reading.
Under the guidance of the Goss brothers, the company began trading from premises in Butter Market, a building which was later destroyed by one of the few bombs to fall on Reading during the second world war. Fortunately, future premises moves were due to the company's continuing growth. The bedrock for this growth was a simple belief that the business should provide unrivalled, first-class assistance to its clients.
Through dilligent management, the acquisition and integration of other local businesses and hard work on behalf of all of its clients in and around Reading, Goss & Co had become the largest insurance broker in the Thames Valley region. By 2006, now under the leadership of Chairman Michael King, the Goss Group of companies had a turnover of more than £20m.
During 2006, the Insurance and Financial planning businesses of Goss Group became part of the Jelf Group. Since then, the staff have continued to provide unrivalled support for the businesses and people of Reading.
