Money worries can cause a lot of stress for employees, but it’s also high on the list of things that can negatively affect their relationship, which in turn can have a negative effect on their work performance. Yesterday was National Spouse Day; therefore we thought it was fitting to talk about what are important topics worth discussing with your significant other. Furthermore as an employer how it is vital you help your employees understand how to manage their joint finances more efficiently in order to reduce their stress.
Topics worth discussing:
- Pensions
- Saving allowance
- Credit histories
- State benefits you receive
- Employee benefits of which you can make use
- Shared credit cards
- Childcare vouchers etc
How can you help?
You can provide support for employees to become financially stable in several forms. You can provide them with access to financial advice, although this can be costly. You can also provide face-to-face in-house education on specific financial topics, or just general financial essentials. Face-to-face education also allows your employees to ask questions of a professional and ensure that the information they receive is relevant to their situation. You can also tailor education to include the benefits that you offer, so it acts as a communication vehicle as well as helping your employees to understand their benefits and how they relate to their lives outside of work. In addition you can provide employees with access to online education courses that they can access as and when they need it.
When armed with this knowledge, they can then apply it effectively to their joint finances. This is useful because there are so many decisions when you’re married, you can’t just think of your own future and your money isn’t just yours anymore.
