Flexible Benefits: our own Julia Turney’s views

Julia Turney was asked to provide comments on a broad range of issues concerning flexible benefits and these were recently published in an ‘Employee Benefits’ supplement.

Her comments were as follows:

Julia Turney, head of employee benefits management at Jelf Employee Benefits, warns employers not to offer multiple enrolment points for popular benefits if they do not tell their employees what perks are available and when. “Communication strategies have to be effective without bombarding people with too much information,” she says.

Flex schemes can be complex, so it is best to keep employee communications as simple as possible. Jelf’s Turney recommends using colour coding in employee literature to show which benefits are taxable and which are tax-free.

Turney adds: “If [employers] go direct, make sure they get evidence that [the benefit] is tax efficient where appropriate. It can be a minefield as each benefi t has its own tax complexities.”

But Julia Turney, head of benefits management at Jelf Employee Benefits, suggests employers should consider suppliers that have clients of a similar size and nature to themselves, because they will be used to catering for similar employee numbers and requirements.

Jelf’s Turney says: “From our experience, [employers] move mostly because of a perceived lack of value. They are paying for a service they are not getting or feel the provider cannot develop the system to meet their needs now and in the future.”
