Most Expats Agree Health Insurance Is Key For Life Abroad

According to a recent survey published on the iExpats website, 95% of expats agree that having health insurance while abroad is essential for them to feel at ease. More then two-thirds of those polled were generally happy with their health insurance cover, stating that it offered good value for money, the survey also found.

However, expats should be aware of the fact that not all health insurance options are suitable for all circumstances. For example, there is insurance that only covers hospital care but people sometimes fail to realise that being treated in hospital is just the beginning. That is why having health insurance that also covers chronic healthcare was ranked as the most important for expats.

Other features that expats felt were vital for their insurance cover included the option for having a full refund of medical costs, followed by rolling renewals on an annual basis. Interestingly, one in three expats bought war cover, results from the survey showed. There is an increasing demand for that cover as a result of the political tension in the Middle East and North Africa, iExpats explained.

Meanwhile, the poll revealed that one of the key features of health insurance for employers offering group schemes was flexibility, both in terms of costs and cover. Many providers offer discounts for health insurance cover based on the number of employees. Other benefits, like paying all out-patient medical charges for an extra percentage of the group premium, were also sought after by employers.
